Proper preparation is key to ensure a strong bond between the asphalt and sealer. We carefully clean each crack, removing dirt, loose debris, and organic matter. Once the surface is cleaned, we apply hot tar directly in, and over the crack. This prevents water from entering the crack and causing further expansion.

 

This is important because of the "freeze-thaw" cycles we get in Idaho. Water seeps into crevasses, freezes and expands. This cycle can occur many times within a short period of time, leading to rapid degradation of asphalt. Eventually, these cracks expand to the point where the asphalt's foundation becomes compromised, and needs to be replaced.

 

To prevent costly replacements, cracks should be filled on a yearly, or semi-yearly basis.
